Thinking of Becoming a Veterinarian? Beware the Debt Trap

veterinarian

We don’t usually write about the veterinarian profession as a pet business opportunity since there’s a huge difference between selling dog treats or dog walking services and becoming a licensed veterinarian.

But we realized that some animal lovers may be considering a career in animal medicine as a way to turn their love of animals into the ultimate business opportunity — helping, curing and promoting wellness among our furry and feathered friends.

But a disturbing article in the New York Times gave us pause and we wanted to share some of the take away messages with you here:

  •  Starting salaries for vets have sunk 13% in the last 10 years to $45,575
  • Median cost of veterinarian school has risen 20% in recent years to $63,000 a year
  • In 2012 only 45% of graduating vets found full time employment down from 84% in 1999
  • 39% of grads in 2012 had no job offers up from 19% in 1999
  • Average debt load for graduates is $160,000
  • Vet enrollments are up with nearly 4,000 new vets graduating each year up from 3,000 in 2002

And in another surprising twist that may be adding to the perfect storm, pet ownership in the US is down according to the American Veterinary Medical Association Sourcebook survey:

  • From 2006 – 2011 the number of dogs has dropped to 70 million from 72 million
  • Cat ownership has declined 6% in the same period
  • Horse ownership has declined 30% in the same period
  • Dog owners spending 20$ less per vet visit
  • Cat owners visiting the vet declined 13.5%

As the article went on to say, “There is no simple solution to the problem of sinking salaries and rising debt nor to the market saturation of vets,” says D. Douglas G. Aspros, president of the veterinary medical association.

So if you still have your heart set on being a vet go in with your eyes open and have a sound financial plan for staying out of the fiscal dog house.
